Ni Zan, one of the four famous artists in Yuan dynasty, has alternative names Yuan Zhen and Yun Lin, born in Wuxi Jiangsu. He is outstanding in calligraphy, poetry and painting. His traditional Chinese painting in particular initiated a style of landscape wash drawing. In Ming dynasty, local people considered that they were elegant because they collected his painting.
The painting residing by Lake and Bamboo depicts a wonderland by Lake Taihu. A placid stream surrounds a flight of slope steps. Several tall trees with thick leaves grow on the slope. Behind trees and by the bank, a straw hut is constructed with thick bamboo groves behind. Green trees grow on tall hill slope far away. The whole picture disperses quiet and cool atmosphere. The style is realistic with concrete landscape. It is one of his representative works.
